Endodontics (Root Canals)

What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a restorative procedure performed when the centre of a tooth, also known as the pulp, becomes infected.
If you're experiencing tooth pain, swelling, or your gums feel hot, you may need a root canal. Another possible symptom is increased sensitivity in the area to hot and cold temperatures.
Pain from an infected tooth can make it difficult to eat or talk, and the tooth may even abscess.
Therefore, it's crucial to consult your dentist if you notice these symptoms. By performing a root canal, your dentist can relieve these symptoms and treat the infection. In some cases, this procedure can save your tooth from needing to be extracted.

When specialized care is required, we refer patients to endodontists for root canal therapy and advanced endodontic treatment.
The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is typically performed over two appointments.
First Appointment
At your first root canal appointment, your dentist will create a tiny access hole in the upper part of your affected tooth. They will then use different files to fine the tooth's canals and sterilize any dead pulp tissues, eliminating the tooth's infection.
When they're done this part, your dentist will use a temporary filling to seal the upper part of the tooth.
Second Appointment
At your second appointment, the small access hole will be opened again, and your dentist will file and sterilize the tooth once more. The canals will be filled with a special filling material to replace the tooth's nerve and prevent it from getting re-infected.
This time, a permanent filling will be used to seal the tooth.
The Benefits of a Root Canal
Are you experiencing a toothache or other discomfort? It could be a sign of an infection. A root canal performed by your dentist can relieve the pain, stop the infection from spreading, and potentially save your tooth from needing to be extracted.
